What brought you to becoming a makeup artist?

I’m a child of the 80′s so watching MTV when it still showed music videos was one of my key inspirations. Seeing Boy Gorge in full drag was awesome. Oh and George Michael’s videos with all the super models that I had seen on the pages of Vogue.

What advise would you pass on to upcoming makeup artists?

 Never stop being open to learn from anyone, the world will send you jewels of knowledge sometimes delivered through experiences when you least expect it, always be open to accepting them.

What excites you the most about The Makeup Show?

 Sharing the excitement that all new makeup artist have when they first attend, the adduce of products, workshops and time to the get to spend with their piers.

Why did you decide to work with Smashbox Cosmetics?

It was a young and up and coming brand that had an awesome heritage (max factor) and one of the largest professional photograph studios in the industry.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?

Leading LA fashion weeks and Shooting All the Smashbox beauty campaigns

What is on the horizon for you, and what new products will we be seeing from Smashbox?

Our products are all developed with studio use in mind so as technology for the camera changes so does our products.

What do you enjoy most about being a makeup artist?

Connecting with people, and teaching your everyday woman how to be her personal makeup artist.

Makeup and music have always gone hand in hand. As artists we are often asked to design looks for actresses, interpret the looks of famous faces on to our everyday clients or find our inspiration in the themes and narratives or our favorite films.  Movies empower, inspire and ignite allowing escape or expression of emotion and creativity.

In this first time The Makeup Show Chicago contest, makeup artists from all over the world will be using makeup to construe, craft and create fine art images out of the emotion, narrative, and character they find in their favorite film or design a new look for their favorite silver screen character.

The Face chart has become much more than just a tool artists use to communicate to their clients. It has become a canvas for expression and an outlet for creativity. Artists are using the face chart to bring their love of color, texture and shape to light and life in new ways with this medium.

The Makeup Show Chicago is looking for some of the best artists in the business to use this medium and show the unlimited potential and possibility of the face chart.

TASK:

Create a face chart interpreting Girls on Film using your makeup kit and your imagination.  Let us see the infinite possibilities for capturing depth and dimension and the drama of a movie from any period in a perfectly executed face chart made from makeup. Whether you are basing your inspiration on celebrated famous films or a little-known favorite of yours, tell us the story behind the celluloid and let us experience the people, movement, light and life they capture in a simple face chart and share your art and vision with our community.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION:

To enter- You must only use The Makeup Show Official Fact Chart by clicking HERE or HERE.  Then, submit your completed face chart with you full name and contact information, the name of the actress and movie that you are interpreting to merlo@themakeupshow.com by 5/24/13. The JPEG may not be larger than 2 MB. We will have our team of editors, photographers and producers select their favorite from the entries.

Where an when did you get started in the field?

I was fortunate to start my career in the beginning of the 80′s, which was an incredibly
creative time for makeup an fashion. I was the assistant of a makeup mega-star in
Paris, José Luis. He created the YSL makeup line in a close collaboration with
Monsieur St Laurent. I was there for the beginning of all that. Amazing times and best
training ever!

Is there a particular work experience that you are most proud of?

I can’t narrow it down to one single experience. Then and now, I still get super excited
on a shoot when there’s a great creative team, an open discussion about the concept, a
contribution from all experts in their field and the pictures look fantastic. That’s what I
signed up for, you know what I mean? But to answer your question, at this point
perhaps I’m really thrilled to see my work in many major books about fashion
photography and in cool museum exhibitions.

What are your top 5 items you must have in your kit?

Hmmm… My Armani foundations, my palette of cream blushes, industrial strength
concealer, the faithful brushes I have collected throughout the years and the spoon I
use to curl lashes with.

What advise would you pass on to those looking to break into the field?

Be curious and ready to learn, know your references, check your ego at the door and
work harder than everyone else and maybe, just maybe, you’ll have a chance to make it
big.

What are you looking forward to in The Makeup Show NYC 2013?

I want to be part this fantastic community, attend some lectures and do some shopping!
Since I’m one of the speakers this year I am looking forward to share my experience
with those who want to know.

You received your “on the job training” with legendary photographers as Guy Bourdin,
Helmut Newton, David Seidner and Hans Feurer as well as many others. While working
with them in Paris & New York, what specifically did you learn from them in regards to
photography?

I learned lighting, composition, taste and vision. I trained my eye to see what they saw.
And most of all I learned to adjust my technique to interpret their vision. Helmut Newton
loved a sophistication inspired by the 40′s. Guy Bourdin wanted the girls to look more
“doll” like. Seidner was all about high fashion-chic and Hans Feurer never wanted to
see any makeup. And all of them were very temperamental and demanding people.
There was no room for any errors. I learned to be very versatile, trust me!

With you holding a top position in both the fashion arena, and celebrity world, how
would you describe the advent of social media in these markets? Do you think it’s
helped bring them together, or has it diluted these industries?

That’s a HUGE question! I think what has brought the big changes in fashion (I fold the
celebs into that world because they play such an important part in it) is not only social
media but the reality shows as well. I think it has given people the illusion of “access”
and a false sense of expertise. You see, in the reality shows about fashion, design or
modeling, everyone can become an instant star. YouTube can make you a “top makeup
artist” with a massive audience. You can be a beauty expert blogger who’s every word
is read by millions. I understand the public’s hunger for all of that. However I question
the integrity and the skill of some of those who posture as experts.

In addition, so much of the information about makeup and technique
online is often very old hat or plain out wrong. So I think social media and TV shows
have created a distortion of the reality. On the positive hand, it has made a lot of people
very curious about fashion and beauty. It is now possible for someone who lives far
away from the fashion capitals Milan, London, New York and Paris to have quite a good
idea what these industries are all about. And that’s great. The ones who know where to
look will actually find quality work, valuable information and great inspiration. But there
sure is a lot of garbage to sift through!

From your positions in these industries what new trends and looks should we be on the
look out for this year?

The current minimal, non-fussy fashion requires a pared down look.
To begin with, I believe there’s a big emphasis on the texture of the skin (tone,
transparency, luminosity). Look for accents of strong color in eye-makeup and lip color.
Some of these products are already on the market but we’re in a phase where we
explore the possibilities and push the boundaries a little bit. I also see eyebrows as a
point of focus. So we’ll see quite a bit of these trends.

Where do you see the fashion/celebrity industries 5 years?

I have feeling there will be an interactive dialogue between the fashion industry and it’s
audience. Consumers will be able to influence the designs and custom-make certain
garments. All of this exists already but it’s in it’s infancy. I believe this relationship will
have an impact on many related industries: beauty, entertainment, design, art… You
see, by giving up all our personal information to online merchants, we’ll go from

How did you get started in the beauty industry? What interested you the most and why?

I have always been interested in beauty. My mother and grandmothers started me early on beauty regimens! When I was a teenager, I modeled and got the beauty bug by watching the makeup artists work on me and others. Eventually, I started painting faces myself. I have worked as an artist for Borghese, Lancome and Prescriptives. My biggest interest is transforming people and watching how it makes them FEEL. You can always lift someone’s mood with a little lipstick

As a writer and beauty editor how do you think the beauty industry has grown since the advent of social media?

Oh my goodness….by leaps and bounds. I think that social media has helped the beauty industry become more collective and less elusive. It’s completely amazing to watch that and experience that first hand. Brands are becoming more social and that in turn helps them find people and artists to work with that have a common connection whether it be the products or their technique.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment as an artist/beauty expert? What would you tell someone who is trying to break into this industry?

My greatest thrill was creating my eyeshadow “Hocus Pocus” for MAC Cosmetics. I will never get tired of looking at it. I have 20 of them in my drawer LOL. As far as breaking into the business, reaching out to those that inspired me has always served me well. I would advise getting a mentor and/or interning for someone that inspires you.

What do you like most about The Makeup Show?

I love meeting all the brands at the show and learning new things. Your never too old to learn! I also enjoy meeting people that follow me on my social channels and connecting with them at the event.

Lori Taylor is a California native that was always interested in artistry. At a young age she would use her crayons to “apply makeup” to her Barbie dolls faces. As she got older she moved on to her grandmother’s vanity where her cosmetics inspired Lori to a career where she has been beautifying faces for over nine years.

Lori has been the Lead Makeup Artist on countless events over the years. This has included fashion shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Los Angeles, Divine Design, Marc Bouwer’s Fall 2011 3-D Fashion Show, Britt Week w/Matthew Williamson & tribute to Alex Alexander McQueen, the MTV Video Music Awards, and Stand Up to Cancer.

She has also appeared on television shows such as How Do I look, Second Look, EXTRA!, Good Day LA, and worked with many celebrities including  Sandra Bullock, Sienna Miller, Paris Hilton, Amy Smart, Rosario Dawson, Linda Hamilton, Taraji Hensen, Shannon Elizabeth, Kerry Washinton, Alfe Woodard, Lorenz Tate,  Dennis Rodman, Nate Parker, Jason Biggs, and Ice-Cube.
