The New York City Makeup Artist Meetup Group is a community for makeup artists in New York City that interacts online via Meetup.com and in person through events and casual meetups in Manhattan. It is the only free networking site for professional makeup artists without a product affiliation. Founded in 2006, the group has grown to over 700 members from the NYC tri-state area and a few through the east coast. The group is a hub for makeup artists at all levels, from the new graduate to the veteran. The key philosophy is that despite your experience level, each artist has something to offer since they all share the same passion – making people look beautiful with touches of makeup!

The NYC Makeup Artists Meetup Group has hosted events with all the major professional brands in beauty, including The Powder Group, MAC Cosmetics, Make Up For Ever, Temptu Makeup, DEX New York, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and Rouge Makeup Studio. Additionally, top talented makeup artists, including Eve Pearl, Sharon Gault and Kevin James Bennett have shared their personal experiences in intimate sessions with the group. This group is organized by Amy Nicole, owner of Chic Studios NYC and Genevieve Santos, beauty entrepreneur and marketer for L’oreal.

Most recently, the meetup created it’s own signature event, The Makeup Challenge. Launched in 2009, six to ten makeup artists showcase their skills in a makeover challenge, which is judged by a panel of industry experts. In addition to winning bragging rights as a top artist, contestants also vie for prizes from top makeup companies, such as L’oreal, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and Scott Barnes Beauty. Also, the meetup was featured in a subway ad for Meetup.com.

Frances Hathaway

Acknowledged as one of the world’s top makeup artists and appreciated for a talent that has shaped beauty brands and been shared in countless editorials and ad campaigns, Frances Hathaway has truly inspired a generation of artists.  

Where were you born? Toronto, Canada

Where do you live now? The West Village, New York City

What did you want to be when you grew up? I was torn between a painter and an artist. I was also interested in helping others.

What was your first memorable work as an artist? Eddie Kohl for British Harpers in Antigua. I covered the girls in a tribal design made from a clay mixture.

How did you know that the makeup artist industry was where you wanted to be? Considering it found me — and I believe there are no mistakes in life — I knew it had to be the right thing.

What do you love about working in makeup? The transition process and how a face takes me on an artistic journey. It’s always a surprise.

What about your work makes it the most interesting to you? Working with new people. Experimenting with new products and, after being briefed about a job, being able to execute someone else’s vision through my hand.

Do you have a signature style? I am known for skin and It’s often noted, by the photographers that I work with, that retouching will not be needed. 

What’s coming next in makeup?  Graphic eye shapes are making a come back, whether it be black, white or vivid color.

What should someone who is looking to develop a career in makeup know before getting into the business? It’s a lot of hard work, takes great determination and focus, but if you follow your dream with an open
mind and heart, nothing is out of your reach.

What type of work do you find the most satisfying? Definitely beauty. But I also love anything where I can totally lose myself, a total zen experience.

How do you continue to grow your career as an artist? You continue to grow in your career by never settling, and never assuming that you’ve got it all under control. Always challenge yourself & reach for the protection.

Do you have a project that you’ve done that you are especially proud of? Recently I worked with Naomi Watts for the cover of Italian Vanity Fair, shot by Ali Mahdavi. It was an extraordinary project.

What are the most important qualities a good makeup artist can possess? Enthusiasm, personality, a good work ethic, precision and creativity.

What inspires you? Nature and textures inspire me. Bone structure really inspires me. I love skin and making it come alive.

Have you ever worked in retail makeup or at a salon? I had my own freelance space within a salon at the very beginning of my career.

Whose work do you admire? Alex Box, Val Garland

What makes you a good makeup artist? Creativity and my ability to always want to do my best.

 What project did you have the most fun working on? Recently I worked with Paula Patton. It was a magical, powerful, energizing day.

 Was there a project that was most challenging? Whenever I do tight beauty, the level of precision can be extremely stressful.

Is there anyone who you haven’t worked on that you would love to do makeup on? I have always wanted to work with Julianne Moore, and she’s my neighbor. It would be so great.

Kind and humble, Matin’s unsuspecting demeanor just gives us yet another reason to fall head over heels for this industry heavyweight. A man who sets the trends, Matin is a name to know and follow.

In this Q&A Matin gives us a brief peak into his industry experience and hopes for the future….Don’t miss his keynote “A Career in Makeup” at The Makeup Show NYC.

How and when did you get started in the industry? What drew you to this field? I started as a sales person/ resident artist while I was an undergrad student. I had trouble carrying trays with drinks and couldn’t get the obvious student job as a waiter. My roommate was an amazing make up artist and needed help for her event. She coached me how to interview and I had a job. It felt natural and super fun the dynamics of working with different people every day.

With a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, does your background in science influence your work in makeup? If so, in what ways? Well the way my degree helps is when I’m creating products and can analyze or understand composition, I can tweak the products by suggesting other options and also make them as healthy and less toxic as the I’m allowed to do.

As an inspiration for so many in the field, who have been inspired by throughout the years? Who/what inspires you? I still draw inspiration from travels and the street. Kids know what’s next and they can foresee trends before anyone else. Their purity and enthusiasm as well as the idea that the “the world is looking at ME” makes them extremely creative.

Would you say that you have a signature look as seen on Hollywoods sweet hearts from Angelina Jolie to Freida Pinto? Skin; and making it look like it glows without looking like piles of products is the most important element of beauty to me. So if I say anything about a “signature” look, I’d say pretty skin and Kajal rimmed eyes.

What has your experience been like as the Global Artistry Director and Brand Ambassador for Laura Mercier? What has this position entailed? It’s a wonderful collaboration putting me smack between my mentor (Laura, I was her assistant back in the day) and the product development genius Linda Treska. Also I see into products from conception to the shelf. It’s nice to be involved and work with the marketing PR and sales and get a 360* view of what happens to products that are born from inspiration and become heavy sellers.

What is your favorite aspect of being a Makeup Artist? What drives you? I love how dynamic and unpredictable the job is. Is different every day. New projects, new people and new ideas present themselves to us everyday. However, it is also the downfall of our job. You have to make everyone happy.

If you weren’t a makeup artist, what profession do you think you would pursue? I would go into development work in third world countries. I have had a taste of it with my project Afghan Hands and I would love to do it full time when I retire.

I know that you devote much of your time and energy to your organization. Could you expand upon
this work? What is the mission of this org? Afghan Hands is primarily a literacy program for women who are widowed or are the sole supporter of their families. We offer them functional literacy, numeracy and human rights, women rights education within their socio-cultural context in the hope that no one can imprison them at home in the name of custom, law or religion.

We set up grass root small centers aroundKabul’s most impoverished areas and beside teaching them, we also refine their embroidery skills and put them to work. Widows are usually liabilities and financial burden to an already financially challenged family. In order to justify their keep, they literally become slaves to their in laws. We encourage them to go out of their family compounds and into a work environment like women do in the free world; even if it is just a few doors down. This and becoming a financial asset to their families has change them to the core. You can see confidence in their faces, in their eyes when they look at you (normally they always keep their gaze down) and in their posture.

Do you have any exciting plan to share for 2012? Fall and holiday colour collection for Laura was so much fun to be involved in. Also working on a new lipstick that is a true comfort lipstick, without any gimmicks of marketing, is something I can’t wait to see succeed. I’m doing a huge project with Afghan Hands that is a secret for now and I literally cannot sleep at night dreaming of its potential.

What piece of advice would you pass on to those looking to break into the field? Be patient and be persistent. We all deserve a break and everyone will get ONE break. At the end, all we need is just one break.

What are you looking forward to at The Makeup Show NYC 2012? Seeing old friends in the industry, discovering new products and meeting new young artists that are like breath of fresh air.
